Super Monkey Ball Vita Includes “Adult Map”

Who said that video games were only for kids? Sega is now marketing Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz with “adult” map packs. Sadly, as of right now, this is for Japan only.

In order to get this “map” you will need to be the lucky owner of one the retail copies a code is stashed in. A limited number will be available and only in Japan at this point.

The “adult map” is themed around Yukie Kawamura, the gravure model who appeared in a recent Monkey Ball promotional video that lacked game footage but had lots and lots of Yukie… bending herself into strange shapes.

And if pictures aren’t enough for you, we even have a video.

So what do you guys think? Does this make you want to buy a Japanese version of super monkey ball or what?!

New Vita app hitting the PSN store tomorrow. More planned. (updated)

You guys wanted new apps for the Playstation Vita? Well you got them. You still don’t have Skype, but you have three other pretty cool looking apps. According to the PlayStation Blog, “PlayStation Vita owners can look forward to a trio of free applications to help you make the most of the handheld console’s unique features, the first of which will be available to download this week, on April 18.”

The new apps that you’ll be getting are, Paint Park, Treasure Park and Wake Up Club.

Paint park:

Turning the PS Vita’s impressive 5”OLED screen into a sketch pad, Paint Park is fun for beginners and expert artists alike. Using PS Vita’s touchscreen to make and share drawings; you can doodle, sketch and scribble quickly and easily with the virtual markers and on-screen colour palette. The PS Vita’s front and rear cameras can play a part too, as you can take pictures and add your own creative imaginings to them.

Paintpark also has a multiplayer mode, where you can sketch with up to 5 of your friends, via ad-hoc.

Treasure Park:

Treasure Park, is an application that allows you to create your own puzzles to challenge your friends with. It’s a great way to connect with friends and other PS Vita users, as you can use the near application and 3G to find puzzles to play and share your own, wherever you are.

Wake-up Club:

Wake-Up Club will also be available this summer. This application turns your PS Vita into an alarm clock that can sync up with other PS Vita users who set their alarm for the same time.

StarDrone Extreme is coming to North America next week

The game that was released last week in Europe, StarDrone Extreme, is hitting the North American Playstation Stores on April 17th. See guys. You didn’t have to wait long.

The unique puzzle game based on controlling the momentum of your ever-moving spaceship with “gravity beacons” is an iteration on the version of StarDrone made for PlayStation 3. However, developer Beatshapers has promised “a bunch of brand-new exclusive levels” as well as “fine-tuned and revamped levels” from the PS3 version.

But the biggest deal is that StarDrone Extreme communicates directly with StarDrone on PS3. Saves can be transferred through the cloud, “allowing you to exchange your current progress” between your handheld and Vita.

According to the playstation blog StarDrone Extreme will set you back a grand total of $3.99.

PS Vita System Software Update (v1.65)

Having fun with your Vita? Want to take an extra 15 minutes to not use it and update it? Well then you’re in luck because Sony has pushed out a new firmware update adds a couple of new, minor, features.

The minor changes/updates include:

A “Notification Alert” option will be added to Settings, so you can toggle alerts on or off

“After 10 minutes” will be added to the time options under Power Save Settings

An Arrow icon will now appear when PS Vita finds new activities in the LiveArea

Caps Lock will be supported in the On Screen Keyboard

For those of you that have “hacked” your Vita and are running HBL on it, then you might want to read this little dealie from wololo himself:

Needless to say, if you are using VHBL for either Motorstorm or Everybody’s tennis, until we know more about this update, I recommend that you do not update, and that you use open CMA. That is, if you don’t have a critical need to use PSN services, of course.

And of course there are a couple of different ways to go about updating your vita,

Select “System Update” under the “Settings” menu and download the firmware directly to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi.

Connect your PS Vita to a PS3 or a PC/Mac and update via Content Manager.

PS Vita Kernel Hack

Maybe you know daveexfusion, or @DaveeFTW, maybe you don’t. But all you really need to know is that Mr. Dave here has found a kernel exploit on the PlayStation Vita (only in the psp emulation) for running psp backups, and full psp emulation for homebrew.

Pretty cool right? Wololo released his exploit and it’s just all been going uphill from there. It seems like Sony didn’t try very hard to protect their new device… Maybe they wised up.

Persona 4: The Golden Includes Vita Skin

Have you ever felt really bad that your Vita doesn’t look like your favorite game? Well today Atlus fixed that problem by giving away a free Persona 4 Vita skin with the game. So now every one will know what your favorite game is.

Atlus announced today that the game’s first print run will include an original system cover sheet and matching wallpaper. You can cover your system in the cover sheet to make it look like you have a custom Persona 4 themed Vita.

So does this make you want to buy the game more? Or is it just a cherry on top, because you were already getting Persona 4?

‘AR Hockey’ works without cards

Since the launch of the Vita Sony has been trying to push their AR games, not all of them have been widely accepted but maybe this one will be different. We have a video for you today of Sony demonstrating a new AR game at GDC, going back to the classics, Pong.

Here’s a quote from Joystiq:

AR Hockey, which the Sony staff assured me was currently only a tech demo, is an air hockey game in which two players face off over a rectangular surface, each controlling their paddle by physically shifting left or right.

This game is a little different from the current AR games that Sony has out right now, because in Pong, you don’t need any AR cards… AR Hockey can build a playing field out of any rectangular surface it detects — basically, any corners the Vita can see. This is the “markerless” AR tech shown by Sony back at TGS, and it seems to work just fine, even if you move the Vita around to change your perspective on the game.

PlayStation Suite Beta open to all developers starting April.

It’s been a while now since we’ve heard about Playstation’s cheap SDK; which entered a closed beta for a chosen few people back in November. But we’ve now been told the open beta will arrive in April, allowing any interested developer to create content for the PS Suite, which will ultimately be accessible to all PlayStation-certified Android smartphones and tablets as well as the PS Vita.

This beta of the SDK will be free of charge, while the official version will come “later this year” and require a $99 annual subscription in return for allowing devs to make their wares commercially available on Sony’s platform.

Allowing people to develop for such a cheap price will be an awesome thing for all Vita users, maybe we can get a handful of good apps on the Vita?

Vita sales hit 1.2 million worldwide

Good news for the PlayStation vita this morning! Sony has announced, that sales of the Vita have reached 1.2 million globally, boosted by the recent launch in Americas, Europe and PAL territories. According to the company, sales of the hardware have “exceeded expectations,” with software sales for the new handheld surpassing 2 million units.

Sony Computer Entertainment prez Andrew House had this to say about the Vita:

“The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, to sustain momentum, we’re working closely with third party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe.”
